"Think in Particle"New feature: Kana & Vocab

Share

Hi everyone~
I've added a new feature: Kana & Vocab to the practice app!

You can use it to practise hiragana, katakana and kanji readings, and also as flashcards to learn the meanings of words.

The words are ordered for learning in a finer way than JLPT levels like N5: they are organised by what I'd like you to learn first in our lessons. Start from Round 1 :)

If you're practising hiragana and katakana

Choose "Hiragana" or "Katakana" under Script, and you'll see a word in English. Enter each hiragana / katakana of the word, e.g. "mountain" ▶ 「や」「ま」.
If you're on a computer, I recommend using the "Chart" mode.

When you learn hiragana with an app, it can be hard to get a physical feel for the 50-sound chart. The five vowels are very important in Japanese, both for remembering words and for pronouncing them. When you learn hiragana, please use the Chart to learn, physically, the hiragana that combine these five vowels with the consonants!

If you're on a smartphone, I strongly recommend practising with flick input. For the same reason as above, I think flick input works really well as a way to get this physical feel instead of the Chart.
It may feel awkward at first, but once you're used to it, flick input is very handy, so I'd recommend it anyway. You can use flick input in Type mode.

As flashcards

Once you're fairly comfortable with hiragana and katakana, switch to Type mode and use it as flashcards to learn words.

I've divided the words into rounds, so you can learn first the words I'd like you to know as the lessons go on. I'm planning to add more words, so please start from the first rounds, and use it to check how big your vocabulary is, too.

Kanji practice

Once you've mastered hiragana and katakana, please give kanji a try next.
In the Kanji section, only Type mode is available.

For now, it's simply for practising kanji readings, but I'll add more useful kinds of practice in the future.

Details

In Hiragana and Katakana mode, you can choose whether the 50-sound Chart shows romaji or not. Turn romaji on at first, and as you get used to it, try turning it off.

If you don't know how to say the word in Japanese, press "romaji" next to Hint at the bottom of the screen. While you hold it down, the Japanese word is shown in romaji.

Hint also works only while you hold it down: it shows the row (あ row, か row, さ row, etc.) of the hiragana you need to enter next.

For kana with dakuten or handakuten, choose the hiragana first, then also press 「゛」 or 「゜」 below the Chart. For a small 「やゆよ」 or 「つ」, do the same: choose the hiragana, then press 「小」 (which means small).

You can practise only the words you got wrong, so please review them too.
They disappear when you close and reopen the app, so download your records if you'd like to keep them.

If I've given you this practice as homework, please send me your records by email.
