Japanese Textbook

Hi everyone!

Some of you have already received parts of it in our lessons, but I'm working on a textbook that you can use to study Japanese and review your lessons: "Learning Japanese Through Its Structure" (しくみでまなぶ にほんご).

What I'm sharing this time is Vol. 1. It covers the "four basic sentence patterns" that form the foundation of all Japanese learning: noun sentences, verb sentences, い-adjective sentences, and な-adjective sentences. It also includes numbers, dates, days of the week, and こそあど, plus a bonus section on attributive modification. There's also a vocabulary list at the end.

What this textbook values most is understanding how Japanese actually works. As long as you look at Japanese through English or another language, it's hard to break the habit of translating in your head before you speak. So I designed it to help you notice the differences between Japanese and your own language from the very beginning. That's also why many of the English translations are deliberately literal.

This isn't a textbook for getting a perfect score on a test. But if you truly understand how the language works, I believe that understanding will lead to good results on tests too. It doesn't follow the JLPT curriculum, but in terms of level, it roughly covers the N5 range.

In addition to the hiragana version for those who can read hiragana, I'm also preparing a romaji version for those who aren't comfortable with hiragana yet.

It's perfect for anyone starting Japanese from scratch, but even if you're further along, you'll probably find parts that help you fill in gaps or review. Please give it a read when you have some time.

If you've been taking a break from lessons for a while, you can also use this textbook to study on your own, so please make the most of it!

I've tried my best to avoid typos, but if you spot anything odd, I'd really appreciate it if you let me know. Any other comments or feedback are very welcome too!

I'm also planning to share this PDF with people who sign up for the free subscription to Samposuru Classroom (散歩する教室), even if they don't take my lessons. So if you have friends who are learning Japanese, I'd be really happy if you could tell them about it!
