(English translation๏ผ‰

Hello. My name is Mari. Iโ€™m Japanese. I live in London. Iโ€™m 32 years old. I speak Japanese, English, and a little German. Recently, Iโ€™ve also started studying Chinese. I studied French at university as well, but it was very difficult.

I was born and raised in Tokyo. When I was 19 to 20 years old, I lived in Berlin. I studied German there. At university, I studied philosophy. But Iโ€™m not very good at it.

After graduating from university, I became a writer and editor. It is a media platform that shares content about gender, LGBTQ+, and feminism. I still work there now.

Last autumn, I started teaching Japanese. At first, I began because I needed to pay the high rent in London. But after starting lessons with all of you, I was surprised to realize, โ€œThereโ€™s a job this enjoyable!โ€

Iโ€™ve always liked thinking about language.

For example, why do we say โ€œใ˜ใ‹ใ‚“ใŒใชใ„ (there is no time)โ€ in Japanese, but in English we say โ€œI donโ€™t have timeโ€?

When I came across the German expression Das schmeckt mir gut (โ€œthat tastes good to me,โ€ or , โ€œใใ‚Œใฏใ‚ใŸใ—ใซใŠใ„ใ—ใไฝœ็”จใ™ใ‚‹...?โ€), I felt really excited.

When languages differ, the way they frame the world is completely different. Every time I compare the languages I encounter, I feel like my world expands more and moreโ€”and thatโ€™s what makes it so enjoyable. During lessons, all of you teach me so many things. Thank you, as always, for sharing so much about your languages, cultures, and ways of expression.

In this community, Iโ€™d like to start from Japanese and create a space where we can all play with language together.

If you have any requests, please feel free to let me know anytime. Thank you, always.

Letโ€™s keep learning Japanese together! See you ๐Ÿ˜‡

Mari
