📚️Reading Material - April 2026 ①

The reading materials are structured to gradually become more advanced as the story progresses.

An English translation and roma-ji version are provided after the Japanese sentence, so please give it a try!

For the first installment, it’s a self-introduction text about me.　

あらためて、自己紹介（じこしょうかい）

こんにちは。わたしのなまえは、まりです。にほんじんです。ロンドンにすんでいます。32さいです。にほんごと、えいごと、すこしドイツごをはなします。さいきん、ちゅうごくごも、べんきょうしています。だいがくで、フランスごもべんきょうしました。でも、とてもむずかしかったです。

わたしは、とうきょうでうまれそだちました。19さいから20さいのとき、ベルリンにすんでいました。そこで、ドイツごをべんきょうしました。だいがくでは、てつがくをべんきょうしました。でも、てつがくはにがてです。

だいがくをそつぎょうして、ライター・へんしゅうしゃになりました。ジェンダーやLGBTQ+、フェミニズムについてはっしんするメディアです。いまもはたらいています。

そしてきょねんのあき、にほんごのせんせいをはじめました。さいしょは、ロンドンのたかいやちんをはらうためにはじめました。でも、みなさんとレッスンをはじめて、「こんなにたのしいしごとがあったんだ！」とびっくりしました。

わたしは、むかしから言葉についてかんがえることがすきでした。

どうして日本語では、「時間がない」というのに、英語では「わたしは時間をもたない = I don't have time」というのでしょうか？

ドイツ語で、Das schmeckt mir gut（それはわたしにおいしく作用する...?）という表現にであったときは、とてもワクワクしました。

言葉がちがうと、世界の切り取り方がまったくちがう。であった言葉を比べるたびに、自分の世界がどんどんひろがる。そんな気がして、とても楽しいのです。レッスン中には、みなさんがいろいろなことを教えてくれます。それぞれの国の言葉、文化、表現について、いつも、いっぱい教えてくれてありがとう！

​このコミュニティでは、日本語からスタートして「みんなで言語で遊べる空間」をつくりたい、とおもいます。

Konnichiwa. Watashi no namae wa Mari desu. Nihonjin desu. Rondon ni sunde imasu. 32 sai desu. Nihongo to, eigo to, sukoshi doitsugo wo hanashimasu. Saikin, chuugokugo mo benkyou shite imasu. Daigaku de, furansugo mo benkyou shimashita. Demo, totemo muzukashikatta desu.

Watashi wa, Toukyou de umare sodachimashita. 19 sai kara 20 sai no toki, Berurin ni sunde imashita. Soko de, doitsugo wo benkyou shimashita. Daigaku de wa, tetsugaku wo benkyou shimashita. Demo, tetsugaku wa nigate desu.

Daigaku wo sotsugyou shite, raitaa / henshuusha ni narimashita. Jenda- ya LGBTQ+, feminizumu ni tsuite hasshin suru media desu. Ima mo hataraite imasu.

Soshite kyonen no aki, nihongo no sensei wo hajimemashita. Saisho wa, Rondon no takai yachin wo harau tame ni hajimemashita. Demo, minasan to ressun wo hajimete, “konna ni tanoshii shigoto ga attanda!” to bikkuri shimashita.

Watashi wa, mukashi kara kotoba ni tsuite kangaeru koto ga suki deshita.

Doushite nihongo de wa, “jikan ga nai” to iu noni, eigo de wa “watashi wa jikan wo motanai = I don’t have time” to iu nodeshouka?

Doitsugo de, Das schmeckt mir gut (sore wa watashi ni oishiku sayou suru…?) to iu hyougen ni deatta toki wa, totemo wakuwaku shimashita.

Kotoba ga chigau to, sekai no kiritorikata ga mattaku chigau. Deatta kotoba wo kuraberu tabi ni, jibun no sekai ga dondon hirogaru ki ga shite, totemo tanoshii desu. Ressun chuu niwa, minasan ga iroiro na koto wo oshiete kuremasu. Sorezore no kuni no kotoba, bunka, hyougen ni tsuite, itsumo, ippai oshiete kurete arigatou!

Kono komyuniti dewa, nihongo kara start shite “minna de gengo de asoberu kuukan” wo tsukuritai to omoimasu.

Request ga attara, itsu demo oshiete kudasai. Itsumo, hontou ni arigatou gozaimasu.

Dewa, korekara mo issho ni nihongo wo manande ikimashou! Mata ne〜😇

(English translation）

Hello. My name is Mari. I’m Japanese. I live in London. I’m 32 years old. I speak Japanese, English, and a little German. Recently, I’ve also started studying Chinese. I studied French at university as well, but it was very difficult.

I was born and raised in Tokyo. When I was 19 to 20 years old, I lived in Berlin. I studied German there. At university, I studied philosophy. But I’m not very good at it.

After graduating from university, I became a writer and editor. It is a media platform that shares content about gender, LGBTQ+, and feminism. I still work there now.

Last autumn, I started teaching Japanese. At first, I began because I needed to pay the high rent in London. But after starting lessons with all of you, I was surprised to realize, “There’s a job this enjoyable!”

I’ve always liked thinking about language.

For example, why do we say “じかんがない (there is no time)” in Japanese, but in English we say “I don’t have time”?

When I came across the German expression Das schmeckt mir gut (“that tastes good to me,” or , “それはわたしにおいしく作用する...?”), I felt really excited.

When languages differ, the way they frame the world is completely different. Every time I compare the languages I encounter, I feel like my world expands more and more—and that’s what makes it so enjoyable. During lessons, all of you teach me so many things. Thank you, as always, for sharing so much about your languages, cultures, and ways of expression.

In this community, I’d like to start from Japanese and create a space where we can all play with language together.
