Quick intro to the April group lesson themes

Hi everyone, it’s Mari :)

Thanks so much for being flexible with the system transition!

Here’s a quick intro to the April group lesson themes—feel free to join anytime if you’re interested.

Also, on the 9th there’s a communication-focused lesson, and right after that we’ll have an open office hour. If you can’t join the lesson but want to ask a quick question or review something, feel free to drop by!

① Onomatopoeia + suru

April 7 (Tue) 14:00–15:30 (London time)

It’s said that Japanese has around 5,000 onomatopoeic words.

In many languages, onomatopoeia mostly describes sounds. But in Japanese, it can also express feelings or situations, even when there’s no actual sound.

They’re also very flexible and grammatically simple, but once you get into them, they really expand your expressive range in Japanese.

Some of you may have seen words like “jime-jime” or “tsuru-tsuru” already, but we’ll take another look at the richness of onomatopoeia and also practice how to use “suru”!

② Movie titles & the case particles

April 13 (Mon) 19:00–20:30 (London time)

This time, we’ll mainly focus on Japanese titles from Studio Ghibli, using well-known films to review how particles like “no” and “to” are used, and also explore the differences in nuance between the Japanese and English titles.

For example, we’ll start with My Neighbor Totoro, the first film I ever got completely obsessed with, and go all the way to Spirited Away, which really boosted Ghibli’s global recognition.

We’ll also look beyond Ghibli at Japanese titles of other well-known films—like Seven Samurai, The Silence of the Lambs, and The Lord of the Rings series—and go through a range of expressions while reviewing particles together!

Both sessions are open to all levels ◯

Also, at the end of the month, I’m planning a lecture based on lines from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. If you’re interested, feel free to join that too :)

But anyway, I am looking forward to seeing you in the next lesson!
